Types of materials commonly used in sheet metal processing and their applications

2024-07-17

Sheet metal processing is a pivotal manufacturing process involving cutting, bending, stamping, and other techniques to shape metal sheets into specific sizes and forms. It finds extensive use across automotive, electronics, home appliances, communications, and various other industries. Different products and applications require specific material characteristics, leading to the use of a variety of metals in sheet metal processing to meet diverse functional and aesthetic demands. Below is an overview of commonly used materials in sheet metal processing, along with their properties and applications:

Cold Rolled Sheet (SPCC):

Cold-rolled sheet is the most common and cost-effective material, suitable for products up to 3.2mm thick. It offers good formability and mechanical properties, making it ideal for electronic and electrical casings, Chassis, and mechanical parts.

Hot Rolled Plate (SHCC):

Used for thicker products due to its lower cost but higher forming difficulty compared to cold-rolled sheet. It is primarily used for manufacturing large structural and support parts.

Galvanized Sheet (SECC/SGCC):

Electrogalvanized sheet (SECC) and hot-dip galvanized steel sheet (SGCC) both offer excellent corrosion resistance. SECC is suitable for electronic products requiring electromagnetic shielding, while SGCC is preferred for outdoor applications demanding high durability.

Copper:

Copper is used in sheet metal processing for parts requiring electrical conductivity, such as electrical connectors and conductive paths on circuit boards. Surface treatments like nickel plating and chrome plating enhance its corrosion resistance and appearance.

Aluminium Plate:

Renowned for its lightweight, good electrical and thermal conductivity, and strong corrosion resistance, aluminium plate finds use in transportation vehicles, architectural decoration, electronic device housings, etc. Common alloys include 6061 and 6063, with various surface treatments such as chromate treatment and anodizing.

Aluminium Profile:

Suitable for parts with complex cross-sectional structures, aluminium profiles are commonly used in box and frame structures. Surface treatments are similar to those of aluminium plates, ensuring durability and aesthetics.

Sheet metal processing necessitates careful consideration of material type, properties, and application scope. CTT's understand the criticality of material selection for product performance, processing costs, and user satisfaction. We continuously explore and implement innovative processing technologies for high-performance materials, providing our customers with efficient sheet metal processing solutions that enhance industry development and maximize customer value.
